The Kravitzes keeping eco-busyArticle by Felicia Dechter Once upon a time, River North resident Jeannette Kravitz was an international operations scout who helped open 300 photo studios in major department stores. Yet the more Kravitz traveled, the more concerned she became about how she was being treated as an American. So Kravitz left her job, and she and her husband, Randy, decided to let young people become the spokespersons for America. In 2000, they started a nonprofit program, Peace Journey, which funds global education trips for local kids. Their first excursion was in 2003, to Tanzania, Africa, with Latin, Roberto Clemente and John F. Kennedy High School teams, and subsequent trips have included Hawaii, Mexico and Morocco. Clean Conscience: Eco- and Kid-Friendly Skin Care Article by Lisa Shames It wasn’t enough for Randy and Jeannette Kravitz, the husband-and-wife duo behind River North’s PEACESpa, that their new line of skin care products contain the highest quality cosmeceutical-grade botanicals and natural ingredients—in layman’s terms: green tea, aloe extract, orange oil, seaweed, chamomile and a slew of vitamins and antioxidants—but they wanted their moisturizers, cleansers and masks to have healing powers beyond their containers too. To wit: 10 percent of the products proceeds go to Peace Journey, a not-for-profit organization that sponsors cultural education trips around the world for Chicago kids. Looking good AND doing good just got a little easier.

ECOChallenge2020 LAUNCHES TO IMPROVE HEALTH OF AMERICAN STUDENTS, PLANS TRIP TO BRAZIL IN 2010
Movement "Challenges" Local Skinner School Students to Adopt Organic Farming Practices, Create Eco-Garden
Black Wednesday Party with “CW” Television Personality to Benefit Cause
Chicago, IL - November 18, 2009 – As part of a commitment to help improve the health of young people in America, PEACE Journey founders Jeannette and Randy Kravitz have launched the ECOChallenge2020, a 10-year series that will take local youths on journeys to all parts of the world to learn the best practices for eating and growing healthy foods in America and sharing ways to care for our planet. The Challenge celebrates its launch with the announcement of two exciting upcoming events: a planned trip to Brazil with Chicago’s Skinner Classical School students, and a benefit party with Colin Egglesfield of the CW’s Melrose Place.
ECO-PARTNERS
Created to commemorate the tenth anniversary of PEACE Journey, a non-profit organization that sends local students from diverse backgrounds on global cultural education trips, the ECOChallenge2020 has partnered with Chicago’s Skinner Classical School to travel to Brazil in 2010 to learn organic farming skills at the Fazenda Ambiental Fortaleza, a socially, environmentally and economically sustainable farm in Mococa, Brazil. As part of the Challenge, students will incorporate the best practices they learn in Brazil at their own school when they create an eco-garden at Skinner.
“We are so thrilled to be working with the Skinner School as they commit to better health and a brighter future,” said Jeannette Kravitz, Founder, Director and CEO of the ECOChallenge2020, PEACE Journey and PEACESpa. “The ECOChallenge2020 encourages students to be mindful of what they are putting into their bodies and is ultimately steering them on a path to good habits and a healthy lifestyle – a lifelong relationship with nutritional, healthful food that can be passed down through generations.”

“I am so excited to launch ECOChallenge2020.org with the commitments of so many people investing in how we can positively influence children’s choices in the food they eat. Our first ECO-Garden 2010 will provide continued interaction with kids to growing food, beginning a movement of youth-green-growers and interest in career paths related to healthy lifestyles! Our legacy of better health in the future is brighter today, with this program.” says Jeannette Kravitz, Founder, Director, and CEO of ECOChallenge2020, Peace Journey and Juvenesse Spa. For additional information about the launch of ECOChallenge2020 please contact us at 312.944.1211 x125 or at media@ecochallenge2020.org. About Peace Journey: Peace Journey sponsors groups of students and teachers on trips to select foreign countries on a mission of cultural exploration. Students travel to each culture, opening doors to communication and lasting friendships online and offline. ECOChallenge2020 creates a 2010 to 2020 year commitment to creating a culture of healthier kids who learn how to respect and be mindful of what they put in their bodies, as well as learn the best practices for eating and growing healthy foods, anywhere in the world. Each mission creates further awareness for youth to care for our planet by sharing the best practices online and offline with others, engage with cultures around the globe and come back home to help build school gardens. Each mission is documented and shared with schools, educators, and parents.
As youth learn to share knowledge with other cultures online, in video/documentaries, and work hands-on with land nurturers and stakeholders, a baseline of change is created as youth build on ideas like commodity exchanges, micro-lending to help women farmers, build schools and gardens, engage with stakeholders, peacemakers, foreign governments and build an international co-op of healthy lifestyles, led by American youth.
“The Doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patient in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease.”
-Thomas Edison
